She was born Susan Firestone in Chicago, Illinois, and attended Highland Park High School and Northwestern University (B.A. and M.A.) She was employed for many years by TriQuarterly literary magazine, the last 14 of which, until 2009, as the Editor. She is married to Frederic Hahn, an attorney, and is the mother of Rick Hahn, the general manager of the Chicago White Sox.Works: Susan Hahn is the author of nine books of poetry, two plays and a novel. Dozens of her poems and short stories have appeared in literary magazines such as American Poetry Review, The American Scholar, The Atlantic Monthly, The Kenyon Review, New England Review, The North American Review and Poetry. She attended Northwestern University where she received a B.A. and an M.A. in psychology She began working at the Woodlawn Mental Health Center after graduation and became licensed as a group therapist. After incorporating writing and art into her therapy, she began to write her own work and submitted some of her poems to Poetry magazine, where they were accepted.In 1997 she started editing TriQuarterly literary magazine. She remained with TriQuarterly until 2010, when the magazine went to an online-only format. She is also a co-editor of works published by Northwestern University.Hahn was the Ernest Hemingway Foundations first writer-in-residence in 2013.
